Do Golf Shoes really make a significant difference in your game?

A good pair of golf shoes is one of the most overlooked pieces of equipment in the game—and yet, in my experience as a PGA professional instructor, it’s one of the most influential on both performance and enjoyment. I’ve seen players obsess over drivers and irons while limping through 18 holes in shoes that simply don’t fit, don’t support, or don’t suit the conditions. That’s a mistake you only make once or twice—if you’re paying attention.

Why Fit Matters More Than You Think

Golf is a rotational sport played over several hours, often on uneven ground, wet turf, or baked fairways depending on the season. Your shoes are your only connection to the earth beneath you.

When a shoe fits properly, a few things happen naturally:

  • Your balance improves through the swing

  • Pressure shifts become more controlled and consistent

  • Fatigue reduces significantly over 18 holes

  • You gain confidence walking and swinging on slopes, bunkers, and wet grass

On the flip side, poor-fitting shoes lead to subtle instability. And in golf, “subtle” is everything.

A slight heel lift, a bit of toe compression, or a lack of lateral support will show up in your swing before you even realise it’s happening.

Modern golf shoes are designed to be athletic, not bulky. But that only works if you get the sizing right—particularly across width and arch support, not just length. Many players are actually wearing shoes half a size too small because they confuse snugness with performance fit.

What Makes a Great Golf Shoe Today

The best modern golf shoes blend three key elements:

1. Stability You want a strong base for rotational movement without feeling locked in or restricted.

2. Comfort This is no longer optional. With 18-hole comfort now standard, cushioning and breathability matter as much as traction.

3. Traction system Spikes or spikeless—both work—but they must match your swing style and the conditions you typically play in.

Spiked shoes still offer the most secure grip in wet or hilly conditions, while spikeless designs offer versatility and walking comfort for firm, dry courses.

Some of the Best-Reviewed Golf Shoes on the Market

Now, I’m not one for hype—but there are a handful of models that consistently earn their reputation with players of all levels.

FootJoy – Pro SL & HyperFlex Lines

FootJoy remains the benchmark for many touring professionals. The Pro SL line in particular is known for its exceptional stability and spikeless versatility. It’s the sort of shoe you forget you’re wearing—which is exactly the point.

ECCO Golf – Biom Series

ECCO’s Biom range is all about anatomical fit. It’s built around the natural shape of the foot, which gives a very grounded, almost “barefoot stability” feel while still maintaining structure. Excellent for walkers.

Adidas Golf – Tour360 Series

The Tour360 is a favourite among stronger players who want locked-in support. It’s firm, structured, and built for power. You feel very connected to the ground, particularly during aggressive swings.

Nike Golf – Air Zoom Victory Tour Series

Nike has leaned heavily into athletic performance here. These shoes are responsive, cushioned, and very popular with players who like a more trainer-like feel without sacrificing grip.

Puma Golf – Ignite Series

Puma’s Ignite line has become a strong contender for value and comfort. Slightly more relaxed fit, very wearable straight out of the box, and a good option for recreational golfers who still want performance.

Where to Get Properly Fitted Golf Shoes

You can buy golf shoes almost anywhere these days, but I always advise players to prioritise fitting over convenience when possible.

Here are the best routes:

Dedicated golf retailers Stores like PGA Tour Superstore and Golf Galaxy typically have wide ranges, multiple sizes, and staff who understand performance fitting rather than just shoe selling.

Brand stores and websites Buying directly from FootJoy, ECCO, Adidas, Nike, or Puma ensures full size availability and the latest models. This is particularly useful if you already know your size and preferred style.

Local pro shops Often overlooked, but many club pro shops carry curated selections and can offer advice based on your local course conditions—something online retailers can’t replicate.

Final Thoughts

If I could give one simple piece of advice after years of coaching players at every level, it would be this: treat your golf shoes as part of your swing system, not an afterthought.

You can have the best swing thoughts in the world, but if your feet are sliding, pinching, or fatiguing, your body will compensate—and not in a good way.

Get the fit right, choose a shoe that matches how and where you play, and you’ll immediately notice more stability, more consistency, and frankly, more enjoyment walking the course.

And in this game, that’s worth every penny.
