Why a Good Golf Glove Could Be Saving You Shots

One of the questions I often ask new students is a very simple one:

"When was the last time you replaced your golf glove?"

The answer is usually accompanied by a sheepish smile.

Golfers are wonderfully enthusiastic about buying the latest driver, chasing another ten yards with a new golf ball, or upgrading to the newest rangefinder. Yet the one piece of equipment they use on every full swing often gets completely overlooked.

Your golf glove.

It might seem like a small detail, but small details have a habit of making a big difference in golf.

It All Starts With the Grip

Every golf lesson I teach begins with the grip.

Before we look at your backswing, your transition, or why your slice has suddenly appeared, I want to know how your hands are holding the club.

Your hands are the only part of your body actually connected to the golf club. If that connection isn't secure, comfortable and consistent, everything that follows becomes that little bit more difficult.

A quality glove gives you confidence in that connection.

Rather than squeezing the life out of the club, you can hold it with relaxed hands and let the club do what it was designed to do.

It's amazing how often golfers discover extra clubhead speed simply by reducing grip pressure.

Feel Beats Force Every Time

One of the biggest misconceptions in golf is that hitting the ball harder produces better shots.

It rarely does.

The best players I've had the privilege to coach all have wonderfully soft hands. They allow the club to swing rather than trying to force it through the golf ball.

A well-fitting glove improves feel, particularly around the greens where precision matters most.

Whether you're playing a delicate chip, a bunker shot, or a thirty-foot lag putt, your hands need to communicate clearly with the club.

That conversation becomes much easier when your glove fits properly.

Fit Matters More Than the Logo

I'm often asked which glove is the "best."

The truth is, there isn't one answer.

The right glove is the one that fits your hand.

It should feel snug without restricting movement. There shouldn't be loose material across the palm or fingers, and you certainly shouldn't have to adjust it after every few swings.

If your glove is bunching up or sliding around, you're losing valuable feedback from the club.

A proper fit gives you consistency.

And consistency is what every golfer is chasing.

Don't Wait Until It Falls Apart

Here's something I see all the time.

A golfer proudly pulls out a glove that's gone shiny across the palm, stretched beyond recognition, with a hole where the thumb meets the hand.

"It still does the job," they'll tell me.

Does it?

Over time, leather loses its grip. Sweat, sunscreen, dirt and repeated rounds gradually make the glove slippery, encouraging you to grip the club harder than necessary.

By the time holes appear, the glove has probably been affecting your swing for months.

It's a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment, yet it has an influence on every single shot you play.

One Simple Tip

Here's something you can start doing immediately.

Carry two gloves.

Alternate between them every six or nine holes, particularly during warm weather. It allows each glove to dry naturally and significantly extends its lifespan while maintaining better grip throughout the round.

It's something you'll see many tour professionals do without giving it a second thought.

Sometimes It Isn't the Swing

One of the things I enjoy most about coaching is solving problems.

Occasionally, a student's issue isn't a complicated swing fault at all.

Sometimes it's worn grips.

Sometimes it's clubs that don't fit.

Sometimes it's a glove that's become so slick they're hanging on for dear life.

Golf has enough challenges without making it harder through equipment that's no longer doing its job.

The Bottom Line

If you're serious about improving your golf, don't ignore the little things.

A quality golf glove won't magically cure a slice or shave ten shots off your handicap overnight.

What it will do is give you a more secure connection to the club, better feel throughout the swing, and the confidence to hold the club with relaxed hands.

And that's where good golf begins.

The next time you're on the practice tee, take a quick look at your glove before you start changing your swing.

You might be surprised just how much difference a fresh one can make.

If you're unsure whether your grip, glove, or setup is helping or hindering your game, I'd be delighted to have a look. Often, a few small adjustments can make a remarkably big difference—and they're usually much simpler than you think.
